Button Bits

Button bits are widely used by drillers in water well, HDD, geothermal, and oilfield operations to penetrate hard rock. While PDC bits have increased in popularity for this purpose, button bit drilling is still favored by many drillers due to their lower cost and ability to withstand extremely high-impact minerals like dolomite, gravel, and the harder varieties of limestone.

Button bits are sometimes known as roller cones due to the rotating tungsten carbide cones they contain. Button bits most commonly contain three roller cones, though one and two-cone bits are still available. Three-cone bits are commonly known as tricone bits.

The tungsten carbide inserts contained in button drill bits come in two varieties, conical inserts and chisel inserts. Conical carbide inserts are more domed than chisel inserts, and they have a higher compressive strength and grind more abrasive formations. Chisel inserts are less domed and more aggressive, but have a lower compressive strength.

PDC Drill Bits

PDC (Polycrystalline diamond compact) drill bits, sometimes known as fixed cutters, specialize in high-speed drilling through sandstone, limestone, and shale. The shearing capabilities of PDC are far more efficient than the crushing mechanics of a tooth or button bit, making their popularity explode over the past few decades. They most often come in two varieties: steel or matrix body.

Matrix body PDC bits are extremely hard, and they contain a tungsten carbide material bonded with a softer, tougher metal. This helps fight against both resistance and erosion. When applied to high volumes of fluid or sand, they offer multiple bit runs and a longer life.

The size and location of tungsten carbide varies from bit to bit, so matrix body PDC bits are sometimes less predictable than their steel counterparts. They are generally preferred in situations where erosion might cause a steel body bit to fail.

Steel body PDC bits are softer and lack some of the protective features of matrix drill bits, but they are capable of withstanding high-impact drilling thanks to the strength of steel. In the event that a steel bit becomes worn or damaged, they are easily repaired and replaced.

Matrix body PDC bits are generally more expensive than steel bits thanks to the cost of tungsten carbide, but the extra cost can pay off in the long run. They generally require less maintenance.

Tricone Drill Bits

Tricone bits are among the most popular and versatile rock drill bits used today. These bits wear away at rock surfaces through both rotation and mechanical friction from the bit’s teeth.

Tricone bits are a specific type of button bit named for the three roller cones that comprise them. Though two-cone and one-cone bits are also available, tricone rock drill bits are the most common variety. The three-sided design takes the energy the drill string collects while it rotates and applies it downward to deepen a well.

Tricones spin thanks to their bearings, which come in four main varieties:

    • Standard open roller bearings – Standard bearings don’t have a seal, so external debris can enter the three cones. This makes them more ideal for drilling shallow holes. For deeper holes, you’ll need to pull them out periodically to clean them. However, they are less expensive than alternatives.
    • Sealed roller bearings – Sealed bearings usually last longer than unsealed bearings thanks to their O-ring seal, which helps prevent debris from getting lodged in the bit and lubrication from escaping.
    • Sealed journal bearings – Sealed journal bearings feature a floating bushing instead of rollers. They’re made from heat-resistant, durable material, making them a great long-lasting option.
    • Air-cooled roller bearings These bearings have passages that allow air to flow through them, cooling and lubricating the parts. These passages also make it easier to clean debris.

DTH drill bits

DTH, or down-the-hole drill bits, are used in conjunction with DTH hammers to drill into a wide variety of rock types. DTH hammer drill bits feature a splined drive, which rotates the bit into the ground.

DTH drilling is extremely common in populated areas because it produces less noise pollution and fewer vibrations than alternative drilling strategies like top-hammer drilling. DTH drilling also minimizes power and energy loss in the drill string and penetration rates don’t decline significantly with increased depth.

Drag Bits

Drag bits are typically used to penetrate soft formations like clay, sand, and some rocks. They work well for mining, geothermal, water well, environmental, and exploration drilling.

The two most common types of drag bits are step and Chevron. Step drag bits are the more common of the two, and they specialize in sand and clay. They produce larger cuttings than Chevron drill bits, though they’re not as durable.

Chevron drag bits are more durable than step bits, but they penetrate more slowly. They’re used for slightly harder surfaces like soft sandstone and shales.

HDD Hole Openers / HDD Reamers

Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) reamers, also known as HDD hole openers, enlarge pilot holes during horizontal directional drilling. Sometimes excavating and trenching are not practical, and HDD allows you to drill and steer underground without using trenches.

There are three steps in horizontal directional drilling. First, drillers create a pilot hole. Next, drillers use an HDD reamer to enlarge the hole. Lastly, the opening allows drillers to insert whatever product is needed.
